Night of San Joan in Tarragona

Petards and firecrackers have already started scaring off the pigeons and cats and there are still 24 hours to go before the beginning of the main event. The Night of Sant Joan is the celebration of the Summer Solstice and the shortest night of the year is made even shorter due to a cacofony of celebrations, fire and music which go on till past three in the morning.

The hotspots of the celebration in Tarragona are at Plaça de la Font, the old streets around the Cathedral and the Serallo and many restaurants have created special menus linked to the event.

Organised by the Ball de Diables de Tarragona, things kick off near the square of the Cathedral at 19:00hrs where the traditional Moscatellada takes place in the Gothic quarter where cake and moscatell will be freely distributed.

At 20.00 hrs head down to the Serrallo for the Rebuda del Foc, the ‘dance of the devils’, a visceral representation rendered by fire, thunder and lightning organised by the  Colla Diables Voramar del Serrallo i Víbria. There are also the Xiquets de Tarragona building amazing human castles.

At the same time a big party celebrating the lights of Solstice starts at the foot of the Cathedral with acts, music, food,  games and audio-visual screening  lasting all night till past 3am (see details of the lineup below*).

23:00hrs is the start of one of  the the most magical night in Catalonia with the Parade of Fire. Head  to Plaça de la Font  and surrounding squares for the dance of the devils, traditional bestiary such as the dragon, the bull are being carried around among a cacophony of noise and fireworks.

(one word of warning and writing from personal experience: do not get too close to the human fireworks unless you are wearing cotton clothing and ideally a hat – anything synthetic will get burn holes  and that includes camera bags and sport shoes!)

Arribada a terres tarragonines del Foc de Sant Joan en relleus.

Tradicional Moscatellada, enguany aquest acte tan vinculat a la nit de Sant Joan, canvia d’ubicació. Coques i moscatell per a tothom fins exhaurir existències.

Rebuda del Foc, proclama, sorollosa tronada, foguerada i ninot.
