The procession of the Three Kings
The first major event of 2013 took off last night with the arrival of the Three Kings in to the Tarragona for the onset of Epiphany. It started at the Serrallo where, at 6.15 pm flares exploded in the night sky, the harbor bridge opened and Melcior, Gaspar and Baltasar arrived transported by ferry.
After a brief interlude on the harbor with local dignitaries, Melcior, Gaspar and Baltasar set off like three rock stars with their entourage in chauffeured cars among the excitement of the crowds. Preceded by Roman soldiers on horses the Three Kings were driven to their respective thrones set high up upon sumptuously adorned floats; once seated the procession started.
Streets were packed with people and children holding out their hands to catch the shower of sweets raining down from the elaborate floats adorned by palms, biblical columns, one even sporting a large replica of the Cathedral of Tarragona. There was an elephant and camel, lions and a roman quadriga, some preceded by bands and all filled with children dressed in biblical costumes, taking relish in emptying buckets of sweets in to the screaming crowds.
In Plaςa de la Font three red velvet thrones had been set up on a stage and when Melcior, Gaspar and Baltasar arrived each took a seat. Baltasar then addressed the thousand of parents and children gathered with a speech about times being difficult and not to aspect too many present and just be good with one another. Then the Three Kings disbanded and vanished until next year.
