Ballet at the balcony

If there is one yearly event in Tarragona that has the lightness of a poetic leap it’s the ballet exercise at  the Balcó del Mediterrani.  Over one hundred student ballerinas of all ages gather together for a ballet demonstration at one of Tarragona’s most stunning landmarks.

Surrounded by blue sea and sky and a large crowd of watchful parents, patrons, tourists and the casual passenger, the student ballerinas paid their tribute to the international day of dance with elegant steps alongside the rail which separate the old city from a jump in to the sea.

The event was late by one week  because winter returned one last time.

Transforming the iconic rail in to a  barre for ballet  is just the kind of thing Tarragona is so good at, reinventing it self and its people in so many guises, from fire churning devils and feathered glitter dancers, from stone face roman legions and star reaching human towers.  Today we had the swans.
